You probably don’t think architects mix materials and surfaces randomly when designing a new home, but you may not realize how much thought we put into it. Here are some key benefits:

Creating Visual Contrast: Mixing materials (wood + metal/glass/steel) or different textures, colors, or other surface treatments of the same material can subtly break up large plain areas, and add more personality and depth while simultaneously providing continuity to the design. For example, placing warm wood adjacent to a warm color of adobe or stone echoes and differentiates at the same time.

Durability and Utility: Archaeo Architects take advantage of the unique properties provided by different materials to make construction more efficient. We may deploy steel for its strength and resistance to weather on a critical external wall, but use wood on the interior of the same wall for its better insulating quality. 

Cost Efficiency:  One of Steve Jobs’ obsessions was making sure the interior of Apple computers that no one would ever see, was as finely finished as the exterior – sometimes doubling the cost of production. We’re more budget conscious on behalf of our clients; we can offset the cost of more luxurious finishes in key spaces by using lower-cost materials in less visible areas.
